Dr. Gina Ann Garcia
Assistant Professor
Department of Administrative and Policy Studies at the University of Pittsburgh
Dr. Gina Ann Garcia is an assistant professor in the department of Administrative and Policy Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, where she teaches master├óÔé¼Ôäós and doctoral students pursuing degrees in higher education and student affairs. Her research centers on issues of equity and diversity in higher education with an emphasis on three core areas: Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs; postsecondary institutions that enroll at least 25% Latinx undergraduate students), Latinx college students, and race and racism in higher education.
She looks specifically at the way organizational members at HSIs construct a racialized HSI identity, focusing on how they come to serve minoritized populations, including Students of Color, low-income students, undocumented students, and first generation college students. She deconstructs the structural and organizational elements that must be in place in order to transform organizations that are inherently oppressive into equitable and inclusive spaces for these minoritized populations. She also studies the racialized and gendered experiences of Latinx college students, looking specifically at their involvement on campus and the structures of opportunity available for them. Furthermore, Dr. Garcia does research on race and racism in higher education, including understanding people├óÔé¼Ôäós experiences with racial microaggressions and the occurrence of racialized incidents on college campuses.
Dr. Garcia has made numerous presentations at national conferences, including the American Educational Research Association (AERA), Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), and ACPA College Student Educators International, and co-authored multiple publications in top-tier journals including American Educational Research Journal, Research in Higher Education, The Review of Higher Education, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, Urban Education, Innovative Higher Education, and Journal of College Student Development.
Dr. Garcia is the principal investigator for the Midwest HSI Study, partially funded by Penn├óÔé¼Ôäós Center for Minority Serving Institutions. During the 2016-2017 year, she will continue collecting data for the project with support from a Ford Foundation postdoctoral fellowship and Spencer/National Academy of Education postdoctoral fellowship.
