Asian culture — Dure; doo le – Sun (Korea)

Unapologetic as the academic rigor of Tepper may feel, its victims are nevertheless equipped with the brotherly and sisterly love that is intrinsic with a small class size. Although this ‘love’ sometimes inadvertently creates drama, it gives the students an advantage to survive the sanguinary academic torture, and the evolved and material form of this advantage is called dure. Dure, by definition, is a unit of peasants or a group of peons voluntarily formed to survive the brutal workload that typical farming peasants faced in ancient times when the idea of income based taxation or progressive tax was as radical as the idea of Professor Margot’s giving candy bars to students who come late to class. Peasants got together with others whom they could rely on to supplement weaknesses and benefit from collective strengths.

Although dure is a primitive idea, it is taught and trained by all MBA programs in the world. Here at Tepper, there is no income based taxation, i.e. you will get as much optimization homework regardless of the fact that your undergraduate degree is in English. There is also no progress tax, i.e. regardless of your competency, or lack thereof, you will be assigned the same case study as the next kid who consulted for living. On top of that, we are faced with an unfathomable amount of work. Only by natural propensity and instinct, we are attracted to those who are equipped with the strength in the area where our weaknesses lie.

Consequently, we have many dures (plural) here at Tepper. Western culture refers to this as ‘cliques’ or ‘study groups’. As a dure, we write each other rain checks and a rocket scientist may take one for the team under the duress of the recruiting season and mini 3. There may be a free-rider from time to time, but dure relies on a strict rule of nature for that: karma is a b@#$%. So, Tepperites, Korean culture isn’t all that foreign after all. What we do here at Tepper to survive against the tides of unforgiving assignments, Koreans have done for an eternity to survive their toilsome lives under the feudal lords.

Asian Food — Dragon tiger phoenix – Kai (China)

Dragon tiger phoenix is an old type of Cantonese cuisine dish found almost exclusively in South China regions such as Guangdong.

The name of the dish comes from the use of 3 animals. The dragon is represented by snake, tiger is represented by cat (sometimes Masked Palm Civet is substituted) and phoenix is represented by chicken. The recipe is to cook a soup with the snake pieces, chicken, cat, winter mushroom, sweet date and so on. This dish has been rewarded Gold Pot Reward by the Ministry of Commerce..

There are a few varieties of the dish. One version is literally called the "Dragon tiger phoenix big braise". Another is the Chrysanthemum Dragon tiger phoenix". Possibly a liquid version is the "Dragon tiger phoenix wine".
